Westchester County had a population of 1,004,456 per the 2020 United States Census, up almost 6% from 2010. The county covers 450 square miles and has slightly over 40 municipalities – including six cities, 19 towns and 23 villages. On a positive note, the County includes top-rated school districts and in 2021, the median family income hovered at $105,000 but property taxes are among the highest in the country.
In recent years, the county experienced a net outflow as did New York State, overall. Our state once had 45 representatives to Congress – but that number stands at 26 now.
In 2020, Westchester experienced a net inflow from New York City as Covid-19 concerns prompted more families to seek more wide-open spaces. According to the Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress report, in-migration from California was prompted by “climate refugees.” It is anticipated that the changes in mindset and technology regarding “working from home” may have a lasting impact on workforce dynamics.
Revitalization in the River Towns along the Hudson as well as reinvestment in locations like Peekskill, White Plains, Yonkers, and Port Chester have made the County more compelling for residents.
Annual events such as the Tarrytown Halloween Parade, the Jack O’Lantern Blaze, Frosty Day Lighting Ceremony, or historic venues such as Untermeyer Gardens or Cold Spring have resulted in additional destination activities throughout the year. Served by Metro-North Railroad and crisscrossed by various roads, there are many options for traveling in and out of the county.
With several large multinational headquarters – IBM, Mastercard, PepsiCo, and Regeneron – there is a sizable commercial base. Recent years have seen a spike in White Plains satellite offices for many New York City based law firms. There has also been a sprouting of many health care facilities, especially along the I-287 corridor. As a well-regarded moving company in Westchester County, McAvey Moving has assisted many commercial moves of medical providers into the area or to larger offices.
